8 Years in, Aave's founder sees a new lending opportunity outside crypto
When Aave launched in 2017, it didn’t even have enough users to fill a small conference room. Today, the DeFi protocol has ballooned into one of the largest lending infrastructures.
And Aave’s CEO and founder Stani Kulechov thinks the future of borrowing and lending will be a lot less centered on cryptocurrencies like ethereum, or stablecoins, and more focused on tokenized treasuries, money market funds, and eventually, equities.
To follow that vision, at the end of March, Aave implemented V4, its latest protocol upgrade that aims to scale onchain lending, improve overall capital efficiency, and support traditional financial products alongside crypto assets.
The upgrade uses a hub-and-spoke model in which liquidity is held in central hubs and allocated to individual lending markets, or spokes, based on their risk profiles. Kulechov likened the hub to a central bank allocating capital, and the spokes to commercial banks managing their own loan books.
Essentially, the idea is that new use cases like institutional lending, tokenized real-world assets, and fintech integrations can plug into the protocol without requiring an entirely new hub-and-spoke model each time.
"We wanted to build something that is extremely modular with good risk controls, but allows us to extend the protocol into any use cases in the future," he said on stage at the Proof of Talk 2026 conference in Paris.
Risk is top of mind for a lot of teams right now. And through market cycles, Aave has proved resilient, including during the FTX collapse and the sharp unwinds, or the “10/10” October market drop last year. This resilience story forms a core part of his pitch to institutions: while centralized lenders were going underwater and DeFi's reputation was taking collateral damage, Aave's protocol held up and operated as it should.
Today, the very banks that ignored DeFi are building out entire digital asset teams, Kulechov noted. "In the past 12 months, I don't think I have met a bank that doesn't have a digital asset team.” he added. "A lot of these banks and asset managers are actually thinking of building products and what to launch. So it's getting very serious."
And as more tokenized assets come onchain, Kulechov expects risk management to become the responsibility of asset issuers rather than protocols. That means the transparency and auditability that DeFi offers must communicate clearly back into onchain parameter adjustments. It's a solvable problem, but one the industry is still working through.
With that in mind, Aave Horizon, the protocol's institutional-facing product, currently holds roughly half-a-billion dollars in assets, primarily tokenized collateral used to borrow stablecoins. Kulechov sees it as an early version of something much larger, like a programmatic alternative to the traditional repo market, where firms holding tokenized sovereign debt or money market funds can draw liquidity directly onchain rather than going through a Wall Street intermediary.
Going forward, Kulechov views the next frontier for expansion as tokenized equities. Bringing stocks onchain only makes sense once you can offer borrowing terms that beat what brokerages currently provide, which he says isn't a high bar.
"A lot of brokerage accounts offer really uncompetitive terms," he said. "All that can be automated, smart contract-based and transparently done onchain."
By 2030, Kulechov wants Aave to serve as embedded infrastructure for global financial products, and firms beyond those that are native to crypto.

The latest Talking Tokens podcast 🎙️
For today’s episode, we're sharing my Proof of Talk interview with Stani Kulechov, founder and CEO of Aave Labs, to break down why Aave V4 moved away from a single monolithic protocol toward a hub and spoke model that works more like a central bank. Stani gets into why a lot of centralized lenders didn't hold up through both the FTX collapse and last October's market unwind.
Then Stani explains why he thinks the next real growth phase for DeFi comes from financing things like AI infrastructure, tokenized equity, and credit for businesses that have never had access to capital this efficient before.
