Ethereum is revving back up

Given that Joseph Chalom spent over 20 years at BlackRock before becoming CEO of Sharplink, it’s safe to say he knows how long institutions take to go from initial interest to commitment. Armed with that insight, today, he says, we're in the middle of an institutional supercycle for Ethereum.

"Ethereum has the license to win," he said on StrataMedia's Talking Tokens podcast while at the Injective Summit in DC last week. "If you look at the scoreboard, it is actually winning. But the narrative went a little bit sideways over the last couple of years."

While the price of ether languished and its narrative stalled over the past year, Ethereum has nevertheless accumulated a measure of dominance. Across many categories that matter to institutions, stablecoins, tokenized assets, and DeFi, the currency now has more than 50% market share.

But nobody has been playing offense, Chalom said.

Earlier this year, when the Ethereum Foundation said it would focus on shrinking its organization, decentralizing further, and spinning out teams, a group of Ethereum stewards saw an opening.

Chalom, alongside Joe Lubin of Consensys, and Tom Lee of Bitmine, stepped up to fund three new organizations carved out of the Ethereum Foundation that would help the ecosystem cater to institutions.

ETH Systems will build privacy tools for institutions; ETH Labs is to put together scaling infrastructure; and Ethereum Institutional will help institutions learn, build and deploy products on the blockchain.

"They're like the front door if you want to engage with Ethereum," Chalom said.

Institutions care about security, trust, and liquidity, Chalom noted, this is something he learned deeply about while at BlackRock. He argues Ethereum has all three. But what it was missing was a coherent voice translating that into language institutions actually understand.

The industry has moved from launching new products onchain to tokenizing products that already exist with assets already inside them, he says. "You're going from launching new products to tokenizing existing products," he said. "That's a different thing entirely."

He isn’t far off the mark. Robinhood built its blockchain with technology from Arbitrum, an Ethereum layer-2 chain. BlackRock is tokenizing its USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL) on Ethereum and other chains, and has also filed for two additional products. JPMorgan in May launched its second tokenized money market fund, OnChain Liquidity‑Token Money Market Fund (JLTXX), on Ethereum, bringing a total of about $800 million in tokenized assets onchain from the two funds.

“We're in the institutional adoption supercycle,” Chalom said. “We're waiting for it to go J-curve or parabolic. I'm actually very bullish and I believe very strongly because I'm in the conversations.”

Chalom said he’s seen institutional “FOMO” in private conversations, and it seems to be accelerating as banks are rushing to tokenize deposits, asset managers don't want to miss the tokenized collateral movement, and fund managers are watching peers launch onchain and reconsidering their timelines.

"They're not in education mode anymore,” he said. “They're building teams and going into production."

The longer arc for institutional Ethereum adoption will mirror the digitization of equities, which took about 15 years, and the bond market is still at it, Chalom noted. "We're in the bottom of the first inning," he said. "The opportunity has a long run to go."
